This article will explain the use of the ClickView Binary Removal Tool that is available within ClickView Publisher 4.2 and above to remove Binary Data that has existed on your Server from previously downloaded content.
Overview of the ClickView Binary Data Removal Tool:
The ClickView Binary Data Removal Tool is a new utility included within the installation directory of ClickView Publisher 4.2 (Master) or later, which allows institutions to remove their ClickView Library's binary video data from their ClickView setup - provided it has been uploaded to ClickView Online.
By utilising the ClickView Binary data Removal Tool, institutions can free up a substantial amount of storage space which can be used to add additional content to the ClickView Library.
Once the binary data removal process has been completed, this will allow institutions to transition from utilising ClickView Player as the primary video access method, to ClickView Online use. ClickView recommends the transition to ClickView Online (and the respective Desktop and Mobile apps) for a variety of reasons:
- Anywhere, anytime access to the ClickView Platform - ClickView Player can only be used within the institution's local area network
- Improved video delivery via ClickView Local Cache functionality - this keeps video traffic within your institution's local area network
- Enhanced functionality - ClickView Online provides additional features such as ClickView Exchange, ClickView Online Workspaces, Video Playlists, Albert [curriculum code mapping] and Digital Signage
- Additional subscription functionality - ClickView Online provides access to subscription features such as 'TV'
- Fully HTML5 based - ClickView Online can be accessed using any HTML5 compliant browser
- ClickView Mobile and Desktop Apps available for all major platforms to streamline access to ClickView Online (iOS, Android, Windows and OS X
- Single Sign On - ClickView Online Mobile and Desktop Apps can be configured to work seamlessly with Single Sign On
- Improved analytics
ClickView strongly recommends that ClickView Player is uninstalled from all computers within your institution, as ClickView Player requires binary video data for video playback.
Q: What are the prerequisites to be able to run this utility at my institution?
A: Before running this utility, it is required that you run the backup utility to ensure that all video binary data and database records are backed up. For more information on running ClickView Backups, please visit this article.
Q: Why should I run this utility?
A: By running this utility, a significant portion of hard drive space can be made available which can be used to add additional material to your ClickView Library.
Q: How does this tool work?
A: ClickView Library Server saved two copies of each respective video title added to ClickView (if the binary removal process was not enabled). One copy is the video binary data which ClickView Player uses, and the other is the Local Cache variant of the video data which is used for ClickView Online Local Cache playback.
When the Binary Removal Tool is manually run from ClickView Publisher 4.2+ (Master) installation directory, all existing binary data will be removed and only the Local Cache variant of the video data is kept on the server.
Note: If binary data removal has been enabled, every time a new title is added to ClickView Publisher 4.1+, the binary data removal utility (which is built into ClickView Publisher) runs in the background to remove the binary video data - more information on this background process can be found by clicking here.
Q: If this utility is run, does this mean that ClickView Player will no longer function?
A: Yes, as ClickView Player downloads the binary data for the video in order to playback the video and by running this utility, any existing content within your ClickView Library will have its binary data removed - this means that ClickView Player will not be able to download any of the video binary data required for video playback.
Q: What is the advantage of running this utility?
A: By running this utility, a significant portion of hard drive space will be made available on the ClickView Server. This can be used to add additional content to your ClickView Library which can then be viewed using the ClickView Online platform, as well as our Desktop and Mobile apps.
Q: Will this remove the binary data from my entire library?
A: By running this utility, it will remove all existing video binary content within your ClickView Library that have synchronised to ClickView Online.
Your Local Cache and ClickView folder structure will remain fully intact.
Q: How does the ClickView Binary Removal Tool differ to the Binary Data Removal tool within ClickView Publisher > 'Tools'?
A: The Binary Data Removal Tool built into ClickView Publisher runs as a continuous background service (run every 10 minutes), and runs each time a new title is added to ClickView Publisher 4.1+. This background service removes binary data for newly added content, rather than existing binary data content (if binary data removal has been enabled). To remove existing binary data, the ClickView Binary Removal Tool is required.
1. Ensure ClickView Publisher 4.2+ has been installed and you are accessing the server (Master) version of ClickView Publisher. Please ensure also that Publisher has been configured to disable Player usage. This can be done by following these steps:
Open regedit.exe and navigate to HKLM -> Software -> WOW6432Node -> ClickView -> ClickView Library, ensure that removeBinaryData is set to 1.
2. Navigate to the install directory of ClickView Publisher - the easiest way to navigate to the install directory is to right-click on the ClickView Publisher shortcut and click Open file location.
3. Double-click on the application ClickViewBinaryContentRemoval within this folder to open the utility - the easiest way to find the application is to sort by 'Type' to group all 'application' files within the directory (as seen below).
Once you have launched the ClickView Binary Removal Tool, four tabs will be visible:
- All Videos: This will display a list of all video titles. This list provides information about each title such as:
- Which titles are eligible to have binary data removed (as they have been synchronised with ClickView Online)
- Which titles have already had binary data removed by the binary removal tool background service (built into ClickView Publisher)
- Which titles have not yet been synchronised to ClickView Online (and therefore the binary data cannot be removed)
- Which titles have already had binary data removed by the ClickView Binary Removal Tool
- Removed: This will display all video titles which have had binary data removed.
- Pending: This will display all video titles which are currently undergoing the removal of binary data.
- Failed: This will display all video titles in which the removal of binary data has failed.
