This article will explain the use of the Binary Content Removal tool included within ClickView Publisher 4.1+.
Q: How does this tool work?
A: The binary content removal tool is a new utility included and available as of ClickView Publisher 4.1, which allows institution's to sync their data to ClickView Online using ClickView Publisher, and then remove the binary data from their server.
ClickView Publisher [4.0 and lower] saved two copies of video data for each individual title; a binary data copy which ClickView Player uses, and a local cache variant of the video data which is used for ClickView Online local cache playback. When this setting is enabled, only the local cache variant of the video data is kept on the server for any new data imported into ClickView Publisher from the date of the update. Existing binary data will remain unaffected by this update and will remain on the server unless manually removed.
Q: Should I turn this setting on?
A: If your institution uses ClickView Player, do not turn on this setting. By enabling this setting, any new content added to ClickView Publisher 4.1 will have its binary data removed. This means that ClickView Player will not be able to download any of the binary data of new content for playback.
If your institution uses ClickView Online (recommended), then it is recommended to enable this setting and save a significant portion of hard drive space.
Q: If the setting is on, does this mean that ClickView Player will no longer work?
A: Yes, for content newly added to ClickView Publisher 4.1+. ClickView Player downloads the binary data for the video in order to playback the video. By enabling this setting, any new content added to ClickView Publisher 4.1+ will have its binary data removed. This means that ClickView Player will not be able to download any of the binary data of new content for playback.
Q: What is the advantage of turning this setting on?
A: By turning this setting on, it means a significant portion of hard drive space will be saved for any newly added content to ClickView Publisher 4.1+.
Q: Will this remove the binary data from my entire library?
A: By turning this setting on, it will only affect any NEW content added to ClickView Publisher 4.1+ from the date of the update [if the setting was turned on during the upgrade installation] or the date in which the setting was enabled on [via registry].
Q: Why didn't I see the checkbox to enable the 'Remove Binary Data' option during the installation of ClickView Publisher 4.1?
A: New installations of ClickView Publisher 4.1 will install with the 'remove binary data' option enabled by default. It can be manually switched off following the steps below if necessary. The checkbox for the setting will only be visible during upgrades of ClickView Server/Publisher (as seen below).
Q: How often does the Binary Data Removal tool run?
A: Every time a new title is added to ClickView Publisher 4.1, the binary data removal utility is run. The utility will also run every 10 minutes as a background task. It can also be manually run by accessing the ClickView Publisher Binary Content Removal tool (as seen at the end of this article).
For new installations, the binary content removal setting will be enabled by default.
When upgrading an existing ClickView Publisher instance running 4.0 to ClickView Publisher 4.1 or above, the window below will be displayed during the installation.
By enabling the checkbox, you are disabling the Binary Data Removal setting. This means that binary video data will remain on the server, and allow ClickView Player to access the binary data for video playback.
If your institution does not use ClickView Player, then it is recommended to untick the checkbox, and enable the Binary Data Removal setting. If the option is unticked, and 'Next' is clicked, a window prompt will open confirming your decision. Click 'Yes' to continue.
